Skinner Geomatics

Skinner Geomatics was founded in March 2020 by Iain Skinner, ALS, CLS, P.Eng. We are a professional land survey company operating in Alberta and the Northwest Territories. We are licensed to operate in Alberta and on Canada Lands. We specialize in professional audits, subdivisions, remote location surveys, and difficult or unusual boundary issues. Since our inception, Skinner Geomatics has worked on multiple subdivisions, several boundary disputes, and several field investigations. We have partnered with Maskwa Engineering to provide survey services for remote communities in the NWT.

HSE: Health, Safety and Environment

Our safety program is currently under development. It will conform to industry, OHS and WCB standards. We are fully compliant with all OHS regulations including, but not limited to, completing site specific hazard assessments. Crews complete weekly safety meeting, daily hazard assessments and daily vehicle inspections. Crews file a workplan every morning and check in each evening with 3rd party to ensure they have returned safely from the field.

The staff is certified in: Standard First Aid (Level C CPR and AED), Workplace Hazard Materials Identification System (WHMIS), Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) from the Alberta Construction Safety Association, Incident Investigation, Light Duty Vehicles – Driver Improvement and Transportation of Dangerous Goods.

SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE

Iain Skinner ALS, CLS, PEng has worked in the land survey industry for over 24 years. He graduated from the University of Calgary in 1997 with a BSc in Geomatics Engineering. Prior to obtaining his ALS commission in 2002, he spent 5 years in the field all over the province. He obtained his CLS commission in 2009. He worked for the Cadastral Group from 1997 to 2006, with Focus from 2006 till 2015 and with WSP in 2015 and 2016. In 2016, Iain started Lone Pine Distilling Inc., a craft distillery now open in Edmonton, before returning to his survey roots in 2020. During his time at the Cadastral Group and Focus, Iain has worked in the Calgary, Slave Lake and Edmonton offices. Since starting Skinner Geomatics in 2020, Iain has expanded his geographic footprint into the Northwest Territories. He has had the opportunity to work in Hay River and Norman Wells.

Iain has performed various land surveying services to clients in the oil and gas industry and in land development. He has successfully managed numerous projects in oil and gas exploration and municipal development throughout Alberta. Iain’s strong management skills and understanding of the survey processes provide his clients with reliable, technically sound service. Iain has served on the Profession Development committee and currently sits on the Boundary Panel for the Alberta Land Surveyor’s Association.

Iain has a great love of the outdoors, specifically the mountains. During his years in Calgary, Iain could often be found in Banff and Canmore hiking or skiing in the mountains. He has climbed over 20 peaks and is comfortable working in a high altitude, remote environment. Iain often spends his weekends camping in the foothills, playing soccer, cycling or skiing.

Our professional engineers specialize in cold climate engineering design and our technologists and field technicians understand the unique challenges of operating in extreme weather conditions and the logistics of working in remote locations.

Our client base includes government agencies, mines, local contractors, other professionals (architects and engineers), private clients and the remote communities of Northern Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. We assist southern firms to perform work for which we are uniquely qualified.

A division of Maskwa has formed a partnership with Golder & Associates to provide environmental services for the region.
